The domestically-made fighter/trainer jet ‘Kosar’, mainly developed by the Iran Aviation Industries Organization, was unveiled back in July 2017, and showcased to international audience at MAKS air show in Moscow.
‘Kosar’ is an advanced fighter jet with a Close Air Support (CAS) role that has made Iran one of the few countries with the know-how of designing and manufacturing such jets equipped with 4th generation avionic and fire-control systems.
The jet has been mass-produced on Saturday morning, in the presence of Iran's Army Commander Major General Seyed Abdolrahim Mousavi and Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami, with one-seat and two-seat, the latter of which can be used for both military and training purposes.
The twin-engined, two-seat Kosar jet had successfully run through test-flights on August 21 in the presence of President Rouhani.
At its inauguration in August, President Rouhani said "with a couple of sentences, one can start a fight. With a couple of military moves, one can enter a confrontation. But then it will be costly; the skill is to protect the country with minimum cost."
Hatami also said the aircraft programme was motivated by memories of air raids Iran suffered during its eight-year war with Iraq in the 1980s, and by repeated threats from Israel and the United States that "all options are on the table" in dealing with Iran.
